Just below Oberbozen, in a beautiful location and easily accessible on a walk to the Earth Pyramids of Oberbozen, lies the Moarhof.
Farmer Margaretha shares how, over twenty years ago – at the end of October 2001 – she and her husband Franz Obkircher opened a small farmhouse tavern.
Originally from Sarntal, Margaretha already had experience in hospitality, having worked for several years at the Parkhotel Holzner.
And as one might expect, the idea behind the Moarhof was to offer guests authentic homemade South Tyrolean cuisine.
But what to do during quieter times, when fewer guests stop by? Complaining doesn’t help – fresh ideas are needed!
At the Moarhof, this led to a truly “well-rounded” concept – something perfectly suited to a farmhouse inn and no longer commonly prepared in most households:
dumplings ("Knödel"), in all their glorious variety!
Every year, from mid-February to mid-March, guests can enjoy around 25 different types of dumplings – from the classic bacon dumpling in broth, to dumplings with stone pine, to sweet versions like the Kloatzn dumpling (made with dried pears).
The Moarhof is also known for dishes such as Gröstel with cabbage salad, goulash, homemade pasta pockets with various fillings, handmade tagliatelle, and several kinds of strudel.
Margaretha notes that the traditional speck board with cheese, bread, and pickled cucumbers is still very popular with hikers.
Their own garden, farm-raised animals, and meat from the local butcher ensure a menu that is both regional and seasonal.
For the Obkircher family, hospitality comes first. They want their guests to feel at home – not just enjoying the food, but also the peace of the garden, the surrounding nature, or the cozy atmosphere of the traditional Stube.
What makes food lovers’ hearts beat faster at the Moarhof?
For loyal guests Richard Tauferer and Helga Rieder, the answer is clear: dumplings!
“Whenever we eat at the Moarhof, we absolutely must have the liver dumpling in broth. The beetroot dumplings with creamy cheese sauce are almost a must, too. And we always finish off with a warm and delicious homemade apple strudel.”
