Impressions from the Ritten Summer Plays

Theatre under the Stars

An ancient courtyard, a bent tree, and above us the moon and a few clouds – this is the magical setting of the Ritten Summer Plays. If you think this is a sports event, think again. It’s all about theatre under the starry sky.

The tradition of theatre on the Ritten began with the summer retreat. Already in the 17th century, the upper class of Bolzano would spend their summer months enjoying all kinds of entertainment – including theatre performances.

Since 1973, for over 40 years now, the so-called Ritten Summer Plays have been held from the end of July to mid-August in Lengmoos.

The venue is the Deutschordenskommende – the beautiful, historic courtyard is a stage in itself. Depending on the play, more or less elaborate stage sets are added. Before the performance starts, visitors meet for a glass of sparkling wine or local wine, setting the tone for what will hopefully be a warm summer night. The performance begins at 9:00 p.m.

The actors are a mix of professionals and amateurs. The focus of the Summer Plays is deliberately on folk theatre. Sometimes funny, sometimes serious – but always full of passion, effort, and dedication.
